Roxburgh, February 27:
At a public meeting held last night, a Com'iriittee was formed with the object of inviting Mr: Holloway to the district, to Bee for himself the manner in which the lands are being disposed of to absentee' capitalists, and the vexatious obstructions placed in the way of the residents obtaining even a few acres. The conduct of the Government in arranging to Bell t6 the runholders 2000 acres fine agricultural land on Millers Plat, repeatedly promised to be opened for settlement, was strongly denounced. Abbovj Feb-. 27, 4.20 p.m. The Mayoral election to-day caused great excitement, on account of the recent tie. The result of to-day's voting was, Goldston, 42 ; Pritchard, 41. Goldston has therefdre been elected. DtmiiDiN, Feb. 27, 7.50 p.m. There are now three candidates in the field for the vacant seat in the Provincial C&uncil, caused by Mr. Bathgate's resignation, viz., E. B. Cargill, C. R. Chapman, and B. Isaac. A private telegram from Auckland received in town to-day states that the notorious Sullivan is still at Auckland, in charge' of Sergeant "Watson. He compares himself to the Son of Man, as he cannot find a resting-place of freedom whereon to lay bis head. He has most urgently requested to be sent back to Dunedin Gaol, there to end the remainder of his days, A large ship, supposed to be the Wild Deer, passed the Ocean Beach to-day. A Eeefton telegram states that the Break o' Day claim, at Lyell, yielded from 51 tons stones 816 ounces of amalgam, equal probably to 400ozs. of gold. The Hon. the Premier was entertained at a banquet at Auckland City last night. A groom & the Imperial stables fell ftom his horse near Hope-street to-day and broke his leg above the knee cap. February 28, 9 a.m. The last issue of the General Government " Gazette " contains a notification of the appointment of Bryan Cecil Haggittas Crown Prosecutor for the district of Dunedin. The brig Chanticleer arrived from Hobart Town yesterday with later Australian and English news. Melbourne, Feb. 16. The English team won the Sandhurst match with seven wickets to spare. A/racas,o curred after the stumps were drawn "between Grace and Mr. Bruce, President of the Club, caused by Grace not attending the luncheon. Some words passed between them, and Bruce then offered to opojogise if in the wrong ; but Grace replied that Bruce was na gentleman, Bruce then replied, that Grace wa3 a d d blackguard. Grace thereupon rushed at Bruce, and a fight was only prevented by the intervention of the bystanders. Feb. 20. The match with the Victorians was resumed to-day, the English score closing for 186 ; Victorians, 92 in second innings. Sydney, Feb. 20. Humes' story about Leichardt is said to be a swindle. He has arrived without relics or manuscripts, and says they Were stolen. Adelaide, Feb. 20. Major Warburton arrived safely from Western Australia. His party had been some time without provisious, and forced to eat all their camels, but three.
