Mr Bathgate's elevation to, the Bench, says the Dunedin " Star " and consequent resignation as M.H.E. and M.P.C. for the City, are at length officially notified. He iB now Judge of the District Court of- .Dunedin, a newlycreated office, to which rumor says a very handsome salary — much larger than is paid to judicial officers of the same grade — is attached The new Judge will- absorb the duties hitherto performed by the Resident Magistrate of Dunedin. We believe the writ for the election of a member of the Provincial Council for the City, in the room of Mr. Bathgate. has been forwarded to the Returning Officer, but he is unable to act upon it, owing to an irregularity, which will render the issue of a new writ necessary."
