ALEXANDRA.

(From our own Correspondent.)

February 13th.

Mining matters are very dull at present, many of the claims at this season of the year being short of water. A good many of the miners are engaged at the' harvest or roadmaking until there is a better water supply. At Bald Hill Flat harvesting, operations are nearly completed, and the crop, although not so good as at one time anticipated, has turned out rather above the average.

On the principle, I suppose, of business first and pleasure afterwards, a meeting is to be held this evening for the purpose of getting up a race meeting on the flat. A very successful meeting took place there last year, and although the horses engaged would not be likely winners of a Dunedin Cup, yet, being for the most part the property of local residents, the competition between the ,nags excited as much interest amongst the spectators, who also enjoyed the inestimable privilege of being free from the clouds of dust with -which people are half suffocated on an Alexandra or Dunstan racecourse.

' The election of a resident surgeon for the Dunstan District Hospital takes place tomorrow. A considerable amount of interest is felt here as to the result. The two candidates — Ers. Thompson and Stirling — have each their warm supporters, who are straining every nerve to secure the election of their favorite, and a close contest is expected.
