RACING N OTES.

By Early Bisd. The Tuapeka Jockey Club meeting is sot down for Thursday aniJEYidaynexfc. Although the number of entries in the Lawrence and Publicans' Handicaps is hardly up to former year 3, yet, considering how few r.iees horses there are in Otago ai the present tiaie, tho numbered must be consilere.i satisfa torv. For the Lawrence Handicap, 1| mile, there are seven entries : Tamboariat, 93t. 10lb.; Malabar, 7st. 121 b.: Wild Boy, 7st. 101 b.; Ada Colt, 7st. 61b.; Color Sergeant, 7st. 21b.; Miss Ving, 7st.; Vei'bena, 7st. To select from the above, I shall place Tara. first, if he comes on the ground fit and well. Malabar is well in according to his Invercargill performances, though he has often been put down for a rank duffer. lam informed that since he has been under the care of Dan O'Brien ho Has wonderfully improved ; another instance of the bad luck or worse management that invariably follows Capt. Hutchinson's horses. Earl of Lynne and Butterfly were expe«*ed here, but they went wroug at the Dunstan. Wildboy is not the horse he was last year, anil from his performance at Depp Stream last week is not in the race. Webb's pair, Ada Colt and Miss Ving, have not arrived % but should they come, the best of the two will be there or thereabouts. Webb does not send horses long distances u;i e&s tliey have some chance. Ycrb'rm is a fine looking, powerful mare, with a goo j dasa of £00% but has never proved berseli a stayer. The last time she met Tambourini in Duse.lin sh-3 hai three stone the best of the weight? and suax-rej. defeat ; but sirue then ahe has considerably improved in appearance, and her trainer, Mr. Harry Goodman, has spared no pain 3to make her fit, so I expect to sco her well up^at the finish. Color Sergeant could not win with a postage stamp up. I shall hold over anyfurther comment on this handicap until your Wednesday's issue, when no doubt all the intending competitors will have arrived. For the Handicap Hurdle Race, tho first event on the card for'"tbe second day, three horses ani entered : old Muslc ; an with list.; Swaggerer, lOst. 41b.; and Rambler, lOst. 41b. U'ho former has been a fa?t hor&e in his day, but he was always a rogue at the hurJles^ Should he go straight, he might have a chance. Swaggerer is a fast horse on the flat, and I am imformed that though, only recently tried at the jumping business he is a wonder. * Ravn'olor is not fast, but, with a good man on his back, is a safe jumper. It is not always the best horse that wins a hurdle race ; bat, barring accidents, I shall place Swaggerer 2, Musician 2, Rambler 3. For the Publicans' Handicap, 1 J mite, there is Tambourini, 9st. Btb-; Malabar, 7&t.- lOlb.t Wildboy, 7et. BU>.; Novice, fcit. 61b.j Ada Colt, 75t.21b.; Verbena, 65t.121b.; MisoVing, 6st. 9?b.j Nolly King, Safe. "Thfr winner of the Lawrence Handicap in this race has to cany 71b. penalty. It will be rather a hard task to select the winner of this, raee^nntil aftef the first day'a races. Novice »ai JTelly Sang are not in the Lawrence Handicap. Tbe fcftnsr iB a faafc mare, and with the light impost should be able to make them all travel j bat she has an unfortunate habit of breaking down when racing, Nelly King has never I performed in public. She is in charge of John I Kelso, at the Victoria stables : and, if £t, will 1 most likely go for the Maiden P*ate, when some idea of her raring capabilities can be formed. However, I shall endeavor to send you the straight tip by Wednesday morning 1 , when I shall hare had an opportunity of

seeing the horses tale their morning gallops. A friend of mine informs me that the wellknown bookmaker Mr. Harry Prince does not intend visiting Lawrence this meeting. It is a thousand pities this gentleman did not express his decision to the Jockey Club before they issued the programme. It might have Bared them a lot of trouble. They would probably have devoted the money to some charitable purpose, as no race meeting can be conducted properly without Mr. Prince's presence. He also^eays that he will do his best to keep his friends and their horses away. If all his friends are like the one he brought ■with" him last year, who, if I remember aright, cot disqualified for foul riding, they are much better absent. Ihe horses already in Lawrence for their engagements, including District Handicap and Hack Eace, are Patch, Verbena, Sultana, Raven, Eambler, Colleen Bawn, Q-erman Louis, and Nelly King.
