LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held in the Cou.ioil Chambers on Monday evening. There was preser.t the Mayor and a full Council. Tue minutes of the previous meeting were rea.l wad confirmed. A letter from Mr. R. A. L&wson, architect, was received. A petition from owners of property situated on the Beaumont road, suggesting that a footpath and water channel be formed along the street line where the retaining wall is being bunt, was received. Chaplin and Co.'s letter stated that their price for a single reel was £60 or £50 each, if three wer9 taken. Cr. Hill thought if the Town Clerk had em rolled in his letter to these parties the resolution he had previously moved in the matter, a more definite reply would have been received. After some conversation, it was decided that another letter be forwarded to Messrs. Chaplin and Co. and others, asking the price of a hose real suitable to carry — feet of hose, and to be made plain and substantial. The following accounts were then referred to she Finance Committee, viz.: — Herbert and Co.. £2 13s. 4d. ; Tuapeka Times, £1 165. ; J. Buckley. £8 ; H. Telford, £1 12s. 6d.; Geo. E. King, £1. TOWN HALL. The Mayor then stated that he had requested the Town Clerk to telegraph to Mr. La-wson enquiring if any tenders for the Town Heil bad been lodged in Dunedin. The reply received was in the negative. He then read the advertisement calling for tenders, and proceeded to open those which had been lodged. On the suggestion of Cr. Mears, it was agreed that the usual system of giving the tenders numbers, and not divulging the names of the tenderers to the Councillors be adopted. The following were the tenders :—: — f No. I— G. O. Clayton - - £2794 16 0 „ 2— David Whittet - - 2775 15 0 „ 3— David M'Donald - 288-4 0 0 „ 4— Geo. Morison - - 2948 15 0 „ s— Alex. Humphrey ■ 2868 10 0 Cr. Hay moved, " That tender No. 2, being the lowest, be accepted. Cr. Armstrong seconded. Cr. Hill asked the Mayor if the cheque accompanying No. 2 was marked. The Mayor replied Chat it was not. Cr. Hill— Then he would move that No. 1 be accepted. The Mayor said No. 1 was not marked eilbu*. , Cr. Sill then moved a» amendment " That the lowest tenderer who has agreed with the t?rrcs of the specification by enclosing a marked cheque be accepted." Cr. Hayes agreed with. Cr. Hill, and ec reader, the amendment. Cr. Armstrong thought it would be very un-wise for a paltry thing like that to accept a fender that might be £150 higher than the lowest one they had received. Cr. Walker agreed with the remarks of Cr. Armstrong. He had no doubt the cheques, although not marked, were good enough. The vote was then taken, when there were for the amendment 2, and for the motion 4. Cr. Hay moved, " That the contractor deposit theWn of 5 per cent, upon the amount cf the contract." The motion not having a seconder, Cr. Hayes moved, "That the contractor {jive security in bond, or by cash to the amount of £250 for the due completion of the contract." Cr. Hill seconded. Carried. The Mayor suggested that the Public "Works Committee bring up a report at next meeting of the Council as to the streets which require to be gravelled. BATES. Cr. Hayes moved, and Cr. Armstrong seconded, '* That the Town Clerk proceed at once with the collection of the rates, and bring up a report" thereon at the next meeting of the Council." The meeting then adjourned.
