WETHERRSTONES SCHOOL.

The annual statutory meeting of. the _Wetherstones school took place on Monday - -evening, the 12th inst. The attendance was .not so good as usual. \ Mr. Hart, Chairman of the Committee, - *«tated the object of the meeting, and called upon' the Secretary, Mr : Carr, to read the mjort and .financial statement.

OiNTLSMEN, —In submitting to you oar report for the past year, we can assure you it has been , our tarneat desire to fulfil the duties of our pffice as efficiently as possible ; and although we have not been as successful in all matters as our predeceaiors, yet on the whole the affairs of the school are satisfactory. The teaching has been ably and energetically conducted by Mr. Johnston and the assistant teacher, Mn. Nelson. The examination by the Revs. Messrs. Beaumont and Menzies proved the teachers had fulfilled their offices of trust efficiently and successfully. The plain and fancy needle work done under Mrs. Nelson's charge was also highly approved by the lady examiners. During the year 74 children attended school ; the attendance for the last quarter being 64, with an average attendance of S3. .Gentlemen, we regret having to inform you that the amount now in arrear for school fees is £35 4s. 6d.; also the readings, one of our ohief resources, have fallen off during the past year very considerably. We may also state that the Education Board owes us an old debt of £27. This, together with £40 still due for teacher's residence, will materially assist our successors— that is provided they 'can use more persuasive powers' than we have been able to do to cause a speedy settlement of the same. We mention the above in order that our successors will, on being elected, see the exact position In which they <rill be placed, so that they may take such energetic steps at the commencement of the year as will, at the termination of their office, enable them to show a clear balance sheet. The receipts and expenditure for the year have been as follows :— REOEIPT3. From Education Board - . £179 11 8 School fees - - . 56 14 6 Reading Room subscription . 11 17 6 Readings. - . . 22 10 6 Other resources • • . 9 13 6 Children's feast subscriptions - 617 6 £287 5 2 EXPENDITURE. Messrs. Beaumont and Menzies for their kind assistance afc the annual examination, and for their kind presents to the best conducted shildren in the school. We now resign our trust into your hands, hoping you will infuse new blood into your next Committee. By so doing we consider it will give a fresh stimulant to the affairs of the school.— Signed on behalf of the Committee. Proposed by Mr. Firth, seconded by Mr. R. Coxon, that the report as read be received and adopted- rin.i.w'o.l unanimously. Mr. Hart then resigned the chair, but, on the motion of Mr. Matthew Coxon, secondod by Mr. Millard, Mr. Hart resumed the chair. The following gentlemen were then elected jncmbers of Committee for the ensuing year, viz.: — Messrs. Carr, Abrim, Millard, Neddree, Donnolly, Mooney, Kofoed, Hay, and Murray, after which a Committee meeting was held, when Mr. Mooney was elected Chairman and Treasurer and Mr, Carr Secretary for the ensuing year.
