MATAKANUI RACES.

(Abridged from '• Dunstan Times") This meeting came off on the 2nd and 3rd January, but, owing to the few horses engaged in the various events iv the spirited programme, was not so great a success as was anticipated, or might have been anticipated. The following is a resume of the races :—: — First Day. Maiden Plate, of 10 soys.; distance, one mile and a quarter. Artful Joe 1 Matakanth Handicap, of 50 soys.; distance, one mile and a half. This race fell through for want of sufficient acceptances, Brunette being the only acceptor. A handicap of 15 soys., substituted for the above, also fell through from a similar causo, Selling Stakes, of 15 soys.; distance, one mile and a quarter. Sammon's Polly 1 Polly was afterwards submitted to competition and realised £27. Hitrry Scfbby, of 5 soys., was won by Taggart's Charley, beating three others. District Handicap, of 15.,. soys.; distance. one mile. (Substituted for the Newtown Handicap.) Taggart's Charley, Bst 1 Second Dat. Miners' Purse, of 10 soys.; distance, threequarters of a mile. This was won by Caller-ou, beating easily five others. Midsummer Handicap, of 30 soys.; distance, one mile and a quarter. Taggart's Fenian, Bst lib 1 Hurry Scurry, of 5 soys.: three quarters of a milo heats. Caller-ou won easily, beating five others. A match was run between Flirt and Miss Grant, which proved a good race, and was won by Flirt by half a length. Consolation Handicap, of 10 soys., was won by Manx Boy with 9st 121 b.
