It is nnderstooA that the Native Chief Ngairo, of the Ngatikahungunu tribe, has proceeded from Greytown as mediator between the disputants at Horowhenua. Auckland, December 31st. The s.s. Wentworth has arrived from Sydney. She left on 24th inst. Her news, however, has been anticipated by the arrival of the Claud Hamilton at the Bluff. • WanCtANTJI, December 31st. The cricket match Wangauui v Wellington so far is : — First innings, Wanganui, 97 ; Wellington, 60. The regatta was a great bungle. In the first pair-oar race some of the crews went round one thing and some another. The fault lies with the Committee, and the race is to be rowed over again. There wa3 great excitement over the four-oared inrigged race. The Elvira, the Wanganui boat, manned chiefly by a Picton crew, won by ten lengths. The Eclipse, of the Union Club, was second ; and the Queen Mab, of the Star Club, third. Geeyjiottth, December 31st. Mr. John White, a candidate for the Snperintendency, addressed a crowded meeting la3t night, and a vote of confidence was unanimouslj' passed. Christchtjech, December 31st. The Provincial Council re-assembled last night. Mr. Kennaway, the Provincial Secretary, after a three hours' speech, moved that Mr. Marshman, the General Manager of Railways, be dismissed, as incompetent and insubordinate. On a division, the numbers were — 15 for the resolution and 15 against it. The Speaker gave the casting vote with the Noes, on the ground that it was a question the administration of which the Council was not competent to entertain. The Council then adjourned till five o'clock this evening. The Government resigned to-day. Mr. Montgomery, formerly Provincial Treasurer, was sent for, and is endeavouring to form an Executive. Mr. Marshman, the Manager of Railways, also resigned. The ship Star of India has arrived from London, with 10 saloon passengers and 317 immigrants. Eight deaths of infants occurred on board, and four births.
