BOXING DAY SPORTS IN LAWRENCE.

Boxing Day in Lawrence was a most oppressive aud uncomfortable day. The heat of ■ the sun and the hot wind combined rendered pleasuring a heavy task ; but all that did not deter the pleasure-seekers from showing up in. 'strong force on the race course to see what ■were dignified by the name of sports. The horse racing was a complete farce. All the „ "events appeared as though they had. been prearranged, and the horses were simply allowed to gallop round for the money. While the horse racing was a complete farce, the foot racing was really good., each race being very well contested. Mr. Armstrong had the refreshment booth, and catered for the public in his usual excellent style. The Committee did their best to despatch the various events in good time. The following is a list of the sports in the order in which they took place : — Pigeon Match of £3, with a sweepstake of 10s. There were four entries for this event. Mr. Jacob Davison was the winnr. 100 Yaeds Footeace — Ist prize, £2; 2nd, £1. — Jacob Davison, 1 j W. F. Downes, 2. Quin, Stuart, and Kurtzman also started. Hanson's Statesman (H. Austin) 2 0 0 Mr. W. Quin's Colleen Bawn was scratched. For the first heat, Sultana jumped away ■with the lead, and never was caught ; for the 6econd. Statesman was withdrawn, and Sultana walked over. QtroiT Mateh — Ist prize. £1 10s ; 2nd, 10s. Mr. J. Coutts, Ist* E- Cunnigham, 2nd. Messrs. Hills and Kelly also competed. Running High Leap. — Kurtznian, 1 ; Davison, 2 ; W. F. Downes, 4. 4ft. 6in. ■was the highest jump. 200 taeds Handicap. — Kurtzmau (2 yards start), 1 ; T. Stuart (13 yards start) 2. F.
