(fkpm our own Correspondent.) » Dunedin, Dec. 16th 8 p.m. Heavy gales of wind raged this afternoon, causing damage to property, and unfortunately resulting in loss of life. Two men went out on the bay in a small boat to pick up palings which had blown off the jetties, and during a violent gust the boat capsized, and one of the men was drowned. ■ "

John Lawrence, of the firm of Lawrence and Powell, who recently started in opposition to Hutchison as eider manufacturers, was charged at the R. Mi's Court to-day by Hutchison with stealing a bottle containing one of the ingredients used in manufacturing the cider, Lawrence, at time- of alleged robbery, having been in Hutchison's employ. The Magistrate considered the evidence conclusive, and sentenced Lawrence, to three months imprisonment with hard labour.

An inquest is to be held to-day.on the body of Mrs. Gideon Smith, who died from childbirth. Drs. Thompson and Stirliug are telegraphed for trom Clyde.
