Tuapeka Times AND GOLDFIELDS Rt-PORTE.T ft ADVERTISER WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1873.

"MEASURES, NOT MEN."

WiJ have on several occasions pointed out the great necessity which exists for an extensiou of the water mains in the town of Lawrence ; but we have been repeatedly met with the reply that the water as at present supplied is useless for domestic purposes, let it first be purified and then extend the pipes. There can be no disputing the statement that the water is unfit for domestic purposes ; but the late fire in the town should prove to those ratepayers who wish the water purified before extending the pipes that it might possibly be the better plan first to extend the pipes and then purifying the water. A scheme for its purification was submitted to the Council by the Provincial Engineer some time ag> ; but we question Very much whether the money required to carry it out would not be uselessly expended. Not so the extension of the pipes. Sooner or later tills must be done, and, if done at once, the water which is now useless for domestic purposes could be made available in the event of a the, which may overtake the town at any moment. For the past six months, negotiations have been pending for the erection of a Town Hall, and there is now a likelihood of the sum of £3000 or £4000 being expended on a building for that purpose. However auxious we may be to see a Town Hall erected that would be a credit to Lawrence, we are still more anxious to see the town - furnished with a good water supply, and a system of- sewerage carried out which will tend to keep from our doors any of those epidemics which sometimes threaten us. Our recommendation to the Lawrence Town Council would be, and we believe vie are backed in it by the large bulk of the ratepayers, to expend no more than £2000 at present on a Town Hall, and devote the other moiety to the water and drainage schemes. This we sincerely believe is the' proper course to pursue, dictated by common sense and a desire to further the best interests of the town, which all are alike anxious to sse prosperous.
