BLUE SPUR.

1 (From our oion Correspondent^) A lecture was delivered in the Presbyterian i Church here last evening (Wednesday) by the Eev. Dr. Copland. The object of the lecture j was the raising of a fund for fencing the church section and to wipe-off an old score, which had accumulated in consequence of the rev. gentleman's non-appearance on a former [ occasion. The doctor, in his off-hand, { pleasant manner, paid all demande last evening I with interest. The audience must have been iboth delighted and satisfied. The subject of the lecture was " Paris under Eepublican rule of 1871," and the rev. doctor, after giving vs a short outline of the cause which led to the war, took his audience through the great series of conflicts in that war, from the taking of Metz to the evacuation of the country by the Germans. The rev. dootor bombarded our citadel for the space of two hours with ! every kind of missile, from the thimble pricks Of the Amazon to the great shell, and wound up his instructive and exciting lecture by assuring the audience that it is only righteousness which exalteth a nation, \vhile sin is a disgrace to any people. The lecturer sat down amid great applause. Mr. M'Lelland, in moving a vote of thanks I to Dr. Copland for his able tecture, took occasion to remark that Dr. Copland had laid the Presbyterian Churches of Otago and Southland under a deep debt of gratitude for having, at his own personal risk, brought out a periodical' which answered well the purpose of a denominational organ, and without which the church would have been destitute of much information which it is her interest to know. Mr. M'Nicol seconded the vote of thanks. i Mr. White moved a voLe of thanks to the Chairman (the Rev. Mr. Cameron.) The "proceeds of the lecture amounted to £3 3s. 6d. ' The Chairman brought the meeting to a close by pronouncing the benediction.
