ALEXANDRA.

(From our own Correspondent.) December sth. Mining affairs are progressing much as usual, and I have nothing of interest to report concerning them. The great case of the Town Clerk v. J. C. Chappie, who was charged with damaging a road within .the municipal boundary, resulted in the defendant being fined one shilling and costs of court.

Last week Mr. Clapcott, one of the Government insurance agents, delivered a lecture in the Public Library on the advantages of life insurance; and afterwards gave some humorous readings in first rate style. Mr. Clapcott has a very popular method of dealing with the subject, and when he becomes better known will always command a good attendance at his lectures. I understand that he has been pretty successful in effecting insurances in this neighbourhood. On "Wednesday last, a meeting was held at Bran's Bendigo Hotel, for the purpose of considering the advisability of holding sports of some kind. during the holidays. After considerable discussion it was resoived to hold a race meeting on New Year's Day. A committee was appointed to draw up a programme and collect subscriptions. A considerable amount was subscribed in the room, so the owners of fast nags will have an opportunity to try their speed, and perhaps win a pnze of a few pounds to pay their holiday expenses.
