(From our own Correspondent.) Dttubdin, December 9th. The Standard Insurance Company is now gaining ground in public estimation. Shares are being rapidly applied for. Applications for 80 souls, under the Nominated Immigration Regulations, have been sent home by the San Francisco mail, making a total of 388 for the month. The " Star" of to-night devotes a leader to a castigation of the Rev. Father Coleman for his accusations as to the Otago Benevolent Asylum. The prospectus of the "Southern Mercury," a new weekly journal, to be edited by Vincent Pyke, is now advertised. Mr. O'Connor received a vote of confidence by 125 to 87 votes. December 10th, 9 a.m. Grogan, although unable to speak, is now conscious of what takes place around him. The National Insurance shares are now floated in Auckland. Sellers, £1 10s. ; buyers, £1. Clyde, December 9th. Hawthorne's Clyde Hotel was burned down on Sunday. The origin of the fire is enveloped in mystery. Very little property was saved, and attempts to save the building were fruitless ; but the fire was kept from spreading. £2000 is the estimated loss. The premises were insured for £600. There was an inquest on Monday, when a verdict attributing the fire to accident was returned.
