The Governor and Lady Fergusson go to Canterbury in time for the races, by the Lima. November 10. To-day is a general holiday ; the morning opened very wet, and threw a damper on the sports. The Patterson left for Canterbury, full of excursionists. The "Independent" will be published as the " Times " after January 1. At tho sports to-day — Fox won the £50 match eos'ly ; Harris won the haniicap; Moran, a young local amateur, beat Delany in the mile race. Auckland, November 7. The " Star " newspaper lately employed carrier pigeons for the coveyance of news. November 10. Further country returns of the Superintendency election increase Lusk to 1,732 i Williamson, 2,821 ; Dargavillo, 2,287. All the papers condemn the floating of tho Standard Insvirance Company at Dunedin as unfair to tho National. At a Catholic ladies' meeting yesterday they subscribed £153 towards the Cathedral fund. The Turf Club nominates number 18. including Papapa, Hatred, Lurline, Calumny, Traitor, Defamer. Christchuuch, November 7. Yesterday the foundation stone of a Congregational Church was laid. This Church, will tosi £4000. Alexandra, November 7. Nepi Ropua, the chief whi died some fortnight since, was buried yesterday. The prophet Beckham, failing to bring him to life, has now lost his influence. The Kopna natives are all off to-day to Te Hira, to dig him up. Towhiao has returned to Te Kuiti, recovered. Neison*, November 10. A gene-ial holiday to-day. The Volunteer review was very successful. Tho Volunteers were inspected, by Major ftiolunond.
