MOA AND MILLERS FLAT PROGRESS COMMITTEE.
{From our own Correspondent.) A meeting of this body waß hold on the evening of the Ist inst,,~whpn the standing orders were adopted for the regulatioa of business, and the ordinary meetings appointed to be held on the last Saturday of each mmth, in the schoolhouse. ' It was resolved to support the application of Mr. Patrick for a general license, as the accommodation was required for the accommodation of residents on Moa Flat and Millers Flat. Mr. Grant moved the following resolution :—": — " Resolved that, in the opinion of this meeting, the action of the Government in handing over land set apart for agricultural purposes to the runholder, as in the case of sections 2 and 3, block 111., Bengcr district, is I deserving of the censure of all persons interested in the cause of settlement. That these sections being in no way required for the working of the run, nor for any public purpose, their withdrawal forms a dangerous precedent for monopoly." The motion was seconded by Mr. M'Lelland. The mover and seconder pointed out, at some length, tho illegality and injustice of reserving lands on which < ompensation had been paid. They also referred to the anomnly of allowing agricultural sections to be held "without referenco to the improvement clauses and conditions. The motion was carried. Mr. M'Leod moved and Mr. Patrick se<ronctecl, '* Tliafc tlie Secretary \>g instructed to forward the foregoing resolution to the Government, draft memorials, and tato steps to call public meetings to provide for the throwing open of these sections, along with the 2500 acre block promised by tho Government." Some conversation followed as to tho forma- I tion of approaches to Millers Flat punt. It ws resolved that, in the event of- the Government granting a subsidy, the Committee should call for tenders. Attention w]as also called to the condition of the main roacl traversing the township of Ettrick. Mr. Nicholson produced j a letter, dated March last, promising that this | road -would be repaired before winter. It ■was now well on to summer, but nothing had been done.
