THE INTERCOLONIAL RIFLE COMPETITION.

We give below the results of the competition for two new men in addition to Captain G oldie, P.C.N.8., and Sergeant Taylor, No. 2, Scottish, to represent Otago at the intercolonial rifle contest ia Melbourne next month. The Council of the Rifle Association selected eight men to shoot for the vacant places, but only five, went to the range. The first competition took place on the 14th, and was at ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yards ; the second on the 16th at ranges of 200, 400, and 600 yards ; and the third this mo ning at ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yards ; five shots at each range. The weather on each day was unfavorable for shooting, which accounts for the rather poor scores made. It will be seen that Reid and Lacey tied for second place, but the former, having made the best shooting at the last two competitions, gains the honor, and Lacey accompanies the team as waiting man. Ciptain Goldie shot over all the ranges, -at the same time and. place as the other competitors, and his score, which we append, justifies the action of the Council. On the first day the shooting was under the superintendence of Major Atkinson ; on the second, of Lieut. Wilson ; and on the th rd, of Lieut. -Colonel Cargill. Sergeant Macphenon acted as marker.
