There is every appearance of the share list of the Mosgiel Factory Company being filled up almost immediately. Although the prospectuses were only circulated this morning, applications for a large number of shares have been already sent in, and we have had shown to us an application from Christchurch for one thousand shares. * "The' improvement in the weather during the latter part qf the week has* produced an almost magical effect up,6n trade, which has 'been marked by great activity! Geneva J.D.K.2. has partaken of the improved rates, and sales have been made at 14s. There has been much inquiry for dried fruits, and currants have been sold at 4Jd to 4scl. Candles, though not absolutely scarce, are not by any means iv plentiful supply, and holders are very firm. Shipments to- be landed have been placed at ll^d. In the provision trade, hams and bacon are much Bought after, and the supply it running short. Sellers, in consequence are firm in asking 9d per lb forrolledand sides, and lid for hams. Cheese is a little easier ; 8d to BJd being obtainable according to quality. A. Mercer reports for the week ending 11th October, retail prices only : — Fresh butter, in prints, best quality, Is 2d per lb ; second quality, lid to Is perlb. Fresh butter, in lumps, lid to Is per lb. New season's salt butter, lid per lb. Old butter from 6d to Bd, according to quality. Cheese, Is per lb. Side and rolled bacon, 9d to lOd per lb. Beef hams, 7d to 8d per lb ; boiled beef hams, 9d per lb. Colonial hams, Is to Is 2d per lb. English hams, Is 8d per lb. Eggs are scarce this week, and are now selling at Is per dozen.
