ALEXANDRA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
(To the Editor.) Sir, — In your issue of the 4th inst. is a letter signed " A Father," asking for information respecting moneys, the proceeds of a lecture given by Vincent Pyke, Esq. I have already reported to the School Committee, and enclosed is a copy of the correspondence, which please insert in your next issue. — Tours, &c. Mm John Cole Chapple.
[copy.] To the Alexandra School Committee. Gentlemen, — It having come to my knowledge, a few days ago, that several members of the Committee are anxious to know what became of certain moneys, the proceeds of «a lecture delivered by "Vincent Pyke, Esq., in 1871, Tbeg to state that had I thought it customary for the ladies who take an interest in the Alexandra School to report themselves periodically to the gentlemen comprising the Alexandra School Committee, I would have had great pleasure in laying before them a detailed account at their first meeting, but concluded rather prematurely from the Committee's well-known zeal in all matters connected with the School that they were fully posted up in its affuirs. I find, however, I nave been in error ; had they possessed any knowledge whatever of the interior management of the School, their anxiety would have been to discover how so many articles could have been purchased from the funds in hand, as I bought one half at auction, thereby securing to the Ladies Committee articles j.t one half the original cost; but as they did not inquire, or if they div, were not properly informed, I have the honor to enclose a list of moneys received and expended j likewise a list given me by Miss Frassr of articles left in charge, I believe, of Mrs. Finlay, to be passed to her successor. Hoping the expenditure of such moneys will meet with your unanimous approval, I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Yours, &c, E. E. Chapple. 31st May, 1873.
[COPY.] Mrs. Chappie, Dear Madame, — 1 am instructed by the School Committee to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of May 31st, and iv reply to state that some of the members of Committee had been informed that the lecture given by Vincent Pyke, Esq , w.is in aid of the School funds, and there being no record of it in the School Committee's books, they were anxious to know to what purpose the proceeds had been applied ; but on ascertaining that the lecture was given for an object quite apart from what they understood it to be, viz., the school funds, the matter was dropped. The Committee are sorry that you should have been put to the trouble of writing such a long letter in explaining things, with which they appear to have nothing to do ; and, in conclusion, would respectfully state the sarcasm conveyed in your letter was rather uncalled for. I have the honor to be, dear madam, Yours respectfully, Charles Morris, Hon. Soc to Alexandra School Committee. Alexandra, June 4, 1873.
