Wellington, September 9th. The construction of the Waipori drainage channel was assented to yesterday. The work is, shortly to commence. The Government last evening attempted to i reintroduce the Gold Mining Bill, but the House refused to consent. Mr. Shepherd made a violent attack on members differing ■with him. He was called to order several times by the Speaker. He accused Mr. Pyke of aiming at office ; A&d designated Mr. White (a Hokitika member) as a delegate. In. reply, Mr, White styled Mr. Shepherd the «' Claimant." The Insolvency Bill was thrown out last evening on going into Committee. September 10th. In expectation of the Provincial Loans Empowering Bill being passed, Mr. Macandrew has introduced a bill to enable *he province of Otago *to borrow £200,000 to construct a railway from Lawrence to Alexandra, land on each side of the line to.be Bet aside as security. Mr. Yogel brought in a bill cancelling two million acres reserve set .isido by the Otago Provincial Council as endowments for hospitals, benevolent institutions, high school, grammer schools, and Clutha river trust. He proposes to limit tk§ area of the reserves to half a million acres for aforesaid purposes, inclusive of the University reserve, not yet Crown granted. A return laid on the table shows that Ministers havefeceived during the last three years nearly £12,000 as travelling expenses and other extras. The Legislative Council are throwing out the Government measures. Mr. Vbgei is very much annoyed. There la a strong feeling in the Legislative Council against the Provincial Loan Empowering Bill, which will most probably be thrown out when it arrives in the Upper House. The squatting element is opposed to any further taxation which affects themselves. If the Bill is not passed, Mr. Yogel threatens to prorogue for a month or so, and convene a special meeting of the Assembly, when the Lords will ifind such addition «i made to their numbers as will anvGta /eminent proposals.
