ROAD TO TUAPEKA MOUTH
(To the Editor.) Sic, — As I understand there is a project on foot to get a road made to the Tuapeka Mouth district via Clarks Flat, and admitting as Ido the great necessity for forming a better road than we have at present, I would ask the projectors to consider whether that is the best suited to our requirements, as we are all well aware that the whole of our firewood, posts, rails, and building timber will soon have to come from that neighbourhood. lam of opinion that a road down the Tuapek a river would be better and shorter than the one at present under consideration. At present there is a large mining population down the Tuapeka, and as the steamer can come up and deliver Kaitangata coal at a very low rate of 1 freight, ifc would enable us to get good coal delivered in Lawrence at about £2 per ton. If a road were made down the Tuapeka, the distance to make would not exceed ten miles, and would be quite level; whereas the one via Clarks Flat would be about eighteen miles, and would have the further disadvantage of being verj hilly. Before committing ourselves to the forming of w-iat I cannot but thin k a very roundabout road, I would call upon those interested to consider the relative merits of the two, and come to the conclusion which would be the most beneficial to the greatest numbers. — I am, &c., _________ Hope.
