LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The English mail via Suez will close at the post oftice, Lawrence, on Sunday next, the 3rd prox. The Provincial Council was prorogued yesterday. Hia Honor the Superintendent, and Members of the House of Representatives who have been detained by the Council, sail for Welliugton to-day. The Beaumont bridge wire rope has broken. A delay of a week in the operations will thus be caused. The Wetherstones readings will take place this evening, at the usual hour. A very good programme has been prepared. We hope the Wetherstones School Committee will receive the encouragement they justly deserve in keeping these entertainments going. We have received the Provincial Engineer's report upon the besb mode of working the Blue Spur tailings. Owing to a pressure of matter, we must hold it over till next week. The plans may be seen at our office. The art union for a case of stuffed birds, which has been on exhibition in Mr. Harrop's shop foi some time past, will take place at eight o clock on Saturday evening,' On Friday evening last, Mr. Moll wo delivered alectuie on "Nicholas I. of Russia: his influence at home and abroad ; with particular reference to the Crimean War." The lecture was in every respect a good one. and was excellently delivered. Mi*. Mollwo, for a foreigner, Ims a wonderful command of the English language, iiml hi« pronunciation is almost perfect. Several of the incidents connected with the Young Russian party of twenty years ago were placed before the audience in a very forcible and psvhetic manner. The 'act of tho lecturer himself having taken a prominent position in the party referred to, gave additional interest fo the lecture. At the close, a cordial vote of 1 hanks was accorded to the lecturer. Mr. Matthew Hay ocoupied the chair.
"Wl are compelled to hold over our report of the Athenieum and Hospital meetings, R.M.s and Warden's Court reports and other loc.il matter. THIRTEEN candidates have been nominated for membership of the first Board of Wardens of the lately proclaimed depasturing district of Waitahuna. The boundaries of the district tire not very clearly denned ; but it would appear to be intended that all that portion of tho commonage within the watershed of the Waitahuna river shall be included in tho Waitahuna district, while that within the watershed of the Tuapeka river shall form the Tuapeka depasturing district. The poll is to be taken at the Waitahuna Court-house and at the Manuka sohoolhouse on Friday, Ist August. Each voter will, it is understood, have a right to vote in favor of as many candidates as he may please, but not exceeding five, which is the number of Wardens who have to be elected. The qualification to vote is that of being the bolder of a freehold, agricultural lease, miners' right, business license, or uriuiujj lease, and residing within the district. Voters must attend iv person to vote and produce the document, which is evidence of their qualification. We aie informed that the gift auction sale on behalf of the funds of the Lawrence Wesloyan church has been postponed until Friday, 19t,h September, at noon, necessitated, we understand, by the unfavorable state of the- weather and the difficulty experienced in getting in cattle and other live stock previously promised in outlying districts. The trustees of the chuich have decided upon disposing of their prgsent building and site, and intend erecting a more suitable and comfortable place of worship on the section adjoining the parsonage. We hope therefore that the postponement will have a beneficial effect, and increase the number of contributors to this worthy and desirable object. Due notice will be given of the sale in oui advertising columns. We have much pleasure in directing the attention of the capitalists of this district to the prospectus of the New Zealand Shipping Co. (Limited), which appears in our advertising columns. It is rare to meet with an opportunity for investing in a small way in an undertaking whinh has so great prospects of prospeiity and success as this Co7«pany promises and has started with. We have no hesitation in recommending this as a good investment for capital. It will be seen that, as the share list close* on the 15th August, immediate application is necessary. A PUBLIC meeting, for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming a Board of Wardens, was held in the Victoria Hotel on Friday evening last. The attendance was very poor. Mr. Thos. Darton occupied the chair. After discussing the question of the necessity of having a Board of Wardens, upon which all ptesent appeared to be agreed, the meeting decided to get a petition diawn up asking the Government to take steps in the matter. This concluded the business. The petition is now in course of signature.
