A fire broke out jon the 22nd in the portion of the Immigration Barracks at Caversham known as the northern wash-house, which was totally destroyed, it having been necessary to pull it down, in order to prevent the flames spreading to the main building. To defective flues in the wash-house fireplace the origin of the fire is said to be traceable One of the immigrants had been washing till nearly five o'clock, and she asserts that her husband afterwards helped to put out the fire, by pouring water upon it. During the day workmen were employed in pulling down the flues in the wash-house ac the southern end, with a view to their being rebuilt. The fire was first noticed by two immigrants, who were standing at the washhouse. They at once gave the alarm, and turned on the watercojks, besides throwing buckets of water on the flames. Several of the Caversham residents were quickly on the spot, and assisted in preventing the spread of the fire. The Fire Brigade, with a small engine, were also quickly on the scene, intelligence of the fire having been conveyed to town by Mr Chaplin,— Star.
