Colonial shares active. The wool shipment* this year are 8,000 bales short. Saturday, noon. A very slender business has been witnessed during the past week, and scarcely anything of interest can be referred to either as occurring in the import market or outside. Rates of carriage to the interior are now very high, and storekeepers in consequence are ordering next to nothing. In this respect little alteration can be expected during the next few weeks. The grain market has also been inclined to quietness, and rates inclined to be easy. For wheat the quotation is 5s 3d, and at this rate sales have been made. Oats have come to hand very sparingly, but owing to the high price reached there is less disposition to speculation. The sales made show values equal to last, viz., 4s 2d to 4s 3d, the latter rate being paid for a fine milling parcel. Barley is dull : pale malting is quoted at 6s 9d to 7s, but supplies are sufficiently good for the present. In flour there is no alteration; Ll2 10s to Ll3, the ruling price, with a tolerably steady demand. Provisions continue in good request, and shipments coming forward in good condition command f ull prices. Prime parcels of butter are worth Is Id. Cheese, 9d ; and bacon and hams, 9£d to lOd. Sugars are noted as remaining very firm, with a full demand, particularly for good yellow and second quality crystals. In teas there has been almost nothing going on, the sales by auction of the previous week having supplied immediate buyers. Kerosene is in very moderate inquiry at 2s Id. In bond, large buyers are indifferent to operations in this item. Galvanised iron and fencing wires are firmly held at last quotations, but no transactions of any importance have come under observation. In spirits we note moderate inquiry, but not extending much beyond town wants. In brandies there has been a slow improvement, and Hennessy's pale is now held for Bs. Hops have been quiet, and the same may be said of malt, though the quantity of English now coming forward, and the approach of the brewing season, will probably soon induce transactions. Hemp goods have been exceedingly dull ; cornsacks difficult to quit at last quotations, and woolpacks not yet asked for.

A. Mercer reports for the week ending July 19, retail prices only :— Fresh butter, in £ and 1 lb. prints, best quality, Is 6d perlb.; second quality, Is 5d per lb. Fresh butter, in lumps, Is 3d to Is 4d per lb. ; powdered and salt butter, Is 3d per lb. Salt butter, in kegs, Is Id to Is 2d per lb. Fresh butter has been remarkably scarce this week, and there is every chance of an advance in prioe for next week. For salt butter in kegs there is very little demand. Cheese is still selling at Is per lb. for good quality. Side and rolled bacon, smoked or otherwise, 9d to lOd per lb. Colonial hams, Is to Is 2d per lb. ; English hams, Is 9d per lb. Eggs are getting plentiful, and selling at Is 6d per dozen.
