THE KAIKORAI PERSONATION CASE. George Calder was charged with having tried to vote at the Kaikorai election, in the name of an elector, his son, while his (accused's) name was not on the roll. Mr Stout defended. After evidence had been adduced similar to that given at the Mayor's Court, and a point having been reserved as to the appointment of Mr Street as Returning Officer, Mr Stout urged that the evidence showed that accused did not intend to personate bis son, but went to the booth believing he had a right to vote. A verdict of " not guilty " was returned. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE SUEZ SERVICE. At a special meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, held on the 15th, the following resolutions were unanimously agreed to :—: — "That a memorial be forwarded to the Hon. the Postmaster-General protesting against the Otago-Suez mails being bronght and despatched via Hokitika, that service being totally unsuitable ; and that the Provincial Council be asked to make a similar protest. "That a memorial (in which the public shall be asked to join) be presented to the House of Representatives protesting against the English mails for Otago being put on board boats sailing from Melbourne for Hokitika, and asking for a more favorable service. "That a memorial (in which the public shall be asked to join) be presented to the Provincial Council, asking the Council to take steps to provide a mail communication between Port Chalmers and Melbourne, in connection with the Suez mails, suitable to the requirements of this Province, in the event of the General Government not modifying the arrangements lately made, so as to give direct communication each way, via Bluff Harbor. "That the Committee wait upon his Honor the Superintendent, and ask his cooperation with them towards securing a more favorable arrangement for the English Mail Service."
