TO THE ELECTORS OF' MOUNT 9 BENGER. pENTLEMEN,— AIthough I appear before you as a defeated candidate, the enthusiastic and influential support I received during the past electi»n shall always be a source of pride and satisfaction to mo ; and I feel assured, had the weather proved less inclement, your votes would have placed me in a much more prominent position. Simply to return formal thanks is but a poor way of expressing the gratitude T feel to the devoted friends who exerted themselves so ably on my behalf at Switzers, the Nokomai, Miller's Flat, and the Horseshoe Bend. I should like personally to return my thanks to each and all, but the stato of my health renders such an act of gratitude impossible. The time spent in visiting the out-lying districts I do not consider wasted, as it has made me acquainted with the requirements of the most promising goldfield in the country. Even Switzers, the centre of a large population, has hitherto bean utterly ignored by the Government, and I beg to suggest that the newly elected member's attention be drawn to the wants of that important district. The expenditure of money on the roads, the formation of a telegraph line, the establishment of side schools, and the improvement of the track to tho Upper Waikaia I would specially notice as deserving immediate attention. Upon the Nokomai not a 1 shilling of Government money has been expended, although there is every prospect of the discovery of a detp lead rendering that place one of the most important mining centres in Otago. Waikaka has been similarly neglected, although, were a block of laud thrown opon for settlement on M'Nab's run, I have little doubt it would in a short time become a flourishing and important mining and agricultural district. To the four gentlemen who voted for me at the Teviot I have to return my most sincere thanks. It it is gratifying to find that even that small number were unaffected by the excited passions of the rival cliques, which converted the late election, as far as Roxburgh was concerned, to a battle for supremacy between two village factions. With feelings of the prof oundest gratitude, I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, C. NICHOLSON. Ettrick, Juno 28th, 1873. THE NATIONAL BANK OF NEW ZEALAND (LIMITED).
