(To the Editor.)
Sir, — Seeing a statement in a letter sigued " Elector" in the issue of your paper of the 10th inst., to the effect that the show of hands in favor of Mr, Ireland was at least ten to one at the meeting held in the Assembly Room of the Commercial Hotel, on the evening of Monclnv, the 9th inst.: I unhesitatingly affirm, without fear of an honest contradiction, that that statement is a gross perversion of the truth ; for, as the chairman of that meeting, I am positive that there was not onefoui'Lh more for Mr. Ireland than for ?>[r. Brighton ; aud further, that meeting w.is not the true test of the feelings of ibc 1 jjubli", but it was arrived at on ?>fn,, •!-%- ],<< on fne declaration of the poll here, and this after every effort had b.^en made to secure Mr. Ireland's return. The writer of thut letter may be entitled to sube-ribe himself an " El'->cl'>r," but certain am I that he n "i\ l.iy no claim to the subscription of myself. — 1 am, &c, Verttas. lin.. burgh, June 21th, 1871
