TAPANUI.
(From our <nsm Correspondent.) June 21.
I The polling for the Superintendental i election was a very tame affair, yery little interest being taken in the ! matter, and no excitement whatever \ perceptible. The free and independents in this district do not seem to see the vital importance of these elections, many having votes not even taking the trouble to record them. Mr. Macandrew's supporters anticipated a large majority, but did not take any steps to secure that much desired result, consequently they were rather disgusted when it became known that Mr. Gillies had a majority of twelve. The result of the poll being — Gillies, 130 ; and Macandrew, 18. However, the overwhelming majority by which Mr. Macandrew has been returned, will act as bain to their wounded | spirits.. A grand variety entertainment, to j be given next month, in aid of your i hospital is on the tapis. Many ladies I and gentlemen have already couie j forward, and the talented eolorod troupe are always ready to give their [ services for any charitable object, so that a great success may be anticipated. Our doctor has had his hands full lately, what with whooping cough, which is prevalent at present, and births. Pour of the latter occurred during the present week, so that our population may be said to be increasing rapidly, notwithstanding tho gross mismanagement of the ioi migration scheme. A subscription list — not by any means uncommon enough in Tapanui to be considered a curiosity — has been going the rounds, and a good amount subscribed, which is to be presented to Mr. James Crawford in acknowledgement of his services as precentor for the last six years. I see " our own " of the " Bruce Herald " has expended a little virtuous indignation on the tyraunical couduct of squatters " stopping the traffic on the old tracks through their runs." There is no doubt " our own " speaks feelingly on this subject. He also says something about a bill to be brought in to make it felony to look over fences ; this is evidently a typographical error perpetrated by the special P.D., retained by the "Bruce Herald" at an enormous loss to set up the compositions of illiterate (I beg their pardons, " literary ") 8.8.'s This should have read as follows: — "A bill to bo brought in to compel J.P.s to have a due regard for their appointments, and not to looh over offences committed by 1 lesser luminaries, such leniency being
calculated to bring their office into disrepute." Yesterday being nomination day for the Matuura election, Dr. Menzies appeared on the scene of action, and gave the electors an account of his stewardship ; after he concluded his address, he was asked several questions, all of which he answered to the apparent satisfaction of the meeting. There being no other candidate, he was re-elected on the motion of Mr. | Thos. Crawford, seconded by Mr. Wm. M'Lelland, to represent the Mataura district in the Provincial Conncil. Mr. Andrew Allan acted as Returning Officer. Everything passed off quietly and harmoniously. The way the roll is at present for this district, the electors residing in Tapanui are a long way in the minority, consequently they have no chance of returning a local man. Captain M'Kenzie opposed Dr. Menzies at the last election, but of course was defeated, the electors in Dr. Menzies' part of the district voted for him to a man. The interests of the two parts of the district seem to be opposed to each other.
