WAITAHUNA ELECTION. UE. a. F. C. BROWNE WILt. ADDRESS THE ELECTORS AT CHALMER'S HALF-WAY HOUSE, Thursday, 12th June, At half-past 7 p.m. i Also, at . MANUKA CEEEK, ON FRIDAY, 13th JUNE, IN THE SCHOOLHOUSE, At half-past 7 p.m. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE ELECTORAL DISTRICT OP WAITAHUNA. GENTLEMEN,— I fully intended, as I U much desired, to ask you to allow me to become your Representative in the Provincial Council ; but learning that many among you were anxious to be locally represented, I did not proceed on my journey to address you, the more especially, as the Clutha District had^ claim upon me which, under the circumA cumstancea, I could not resist. f To thoso among you who kindly tendered me your assistance, I offer my hearty thanks. If I should succeed in my candidature here, I shall not fail to give what aid I can in support of the just claim of your District. J. RICHA.RDSON. TO THE ELECTORS OP WAITAHUNA. GENTLEMEN,— In withdrawing from v« m y candidature for the representation of Waitahuna in tho Provincial Council, I deem it necessary to offer a few words in explanation. I offered myself upon the ' solicitation of several influential residents ; and when I consented to allow myself to be placed in nomination, I was under the impression that a candidate whose views were opposed to mine, and to those of the constituency was to contest the election, I have since ascertained that the only candidates are gentlemen whose views on Provincial administration almost coincide with my own, and who are local men. There is no principle evoked in the present contest, and, I hold the .opinion that a constituency is best represented in the Provincial Conncil — which is an administrative rather than a legislative^ body by a gentleman residing thereinlH Had I been elected, it would have occasioned me serious pecuniary loss, as I would have had to sacrifice professional engagements for a position which, though highly honorable, is, as you are aware, not remunerative. I would have much esteemed the honor of representing such an important constituency as Waitahuna, and would not have hesitated to sacrifice much to have served them to the best of my ability ; and I hope at some future time, I may have that honor. In conclusion, I have to express my thanks to the many gentlemen who voluntarily came forward and proffered me their support and influence. I have, &c, JOHN MOUAT. WESLEYAN CHURCH. mHE RFiV. W. H.
