MOUNT BENGER PLOUGHING MATCH.

The first ploughing match held in this district took place on the 28th ult., on land belonging to Mr. Edward Tubman, situated at his farm on Moa Flat. The weather was all that could be desired, the ground was very good for ploughing, and there was a large attendance. Mr. R. Ayling, of the Coal Creek Hotel, had a booth on the ground, and supplied the refreshments. The following is the prize list : — Ist Prize, £7.— Thomas Ross, ploughman. Bennett and M'Leod, Crookston, owners; 2nd Prize, £5. — John Strothers. ploughman ; John Low, Coal Creek, owner. 3rd Prize, £4. — John Elder, owner. 4th Prize, £3.— Charles Shand, ploughman ; Edward Tubman, owner. sth Prize, £2. — Roderick Mackintosh, ploughman; W. Waagh, owner. Best Kept Harness, silver mounted Biding Whip, presented by J. R. Reid.— John Elder. Best Groomed Horses, pair silver Spurs, presented by J. R. Beid. — W. Wau<*h's team.

A boy 7 years of age, the son of Mr. Labes, of Tuapeka Mouth, -was drowned on Tuesday last, while at play with other children on the banks of the creek. We are informed that a fall of earth from a claim precipitated the poor little fellow into the creek, where he was drowned before assistance could be procured. An inquest was held at the Tuapeka Flat Hotel on Friday, when a verdict of accidental death was .given.
