The public will learn with regret of the death of Charles Knight, which occurred at Addleston, Surrey, in his 82nd year. Deceased was born at Windsor, and at the age of 20, in conjunction with his father, established the "Windsor and Eton Express," which journal he edited till 1827. He also edited the " Plain Englishman," a monthly, published in 1820-22, and being the first attempt to introduce cheap literature of a superior kind. Mr. Knight was the printer aud publisher of the "Etonian," and the circumstance led to an intimate acquaintance with Winthrop M. Praed, MaCKulay, Sidney Walker, John Moultrie, and Derwent and Henry Nelson Coleridge, who afterwards, while under- ! graduates, became the chief contributors to "•Knight's Quarterly Magazine ;" and this in turn, led to the establishment of Mr. Charles Kuighr, as a publisher in London, in or about the year 1823. In 1827 he became connected with the newly founded " Society for the Diffusion-^ of Useful Knowledge," and commenced the publication of the "British Almanac aud Companion," which was followed by the " Library of Entertaining Knowledge," " Penny Magazine." '"Penny Cyclopaedia,": (upon which he expended £10,000 for original contributions) and many other well-known works. Besides the editing of these various periodicals, Mr Knight published several pamphlets and life of Shakespeare. He also edited the " Pictorial Shakespeare." He was further engaged for seven years on his " Popular History of England." and compiled the well'known work " Half Hours with the Best Authors," The whole of his long career was all passed in endeavoring to give cheap and useful literature to the people.

We learn from the " Huwkes Bay HeraLl," that Mr. Cable, late of Waipori, has purchased a run at Wairoi* Hawkas Bay, for the sum of £10,000.
