LAWRENCE GRAMMAR SCHOOL.

The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Friday last, the 25th ult. Present : Messrs Jamison, Menzies, Thompson, Jeffery, Hayes, and Harrop. Mr. Menzies was voted to the chair. As the business* o F theprevious meeting was transacted without a quorum, the sanction of the Committee was sought and obtained for it. Atjlthe previous meeting, arrangements had been made for the employment of another pupil teacher ; and at the suggestion of Mr. Stenhouse, certain pupils whom he deemed eligible had been asked to apply for the appointment. Iv response, three applications were handed in — from Misses Annie Anderson, Helen Herd,* and Master Hugh Tichener. Each of the applicants having referred to Mr. Stenhouse for a' recommendation, he handed to the Chairman the reports of marks for 1871-2. The latter proceeded to read the marks against the names of the applicants, when Mr. Hayes asked if it was intended that the Committee should be guided by these ; for his part, where all were so nearly alike, he should be guided by other considerations as well. Mr, Stenhouse, in reply, stated that since the former meeting, he had discovered that the appointment lay with himself, and as Miss Annie Anderson had the highest number of marks, and had acquitted herself in an examination in arithmetic that day, even better than the present pupil teacher, who passed her examination for a third class certificate with honors, he nominated her. The Chairman observed that according to that rule of appointment for which authority was submitted by Mr. Stenhouse in the Education Ordinance, it would be better in future not to call for any applications. Mr. Jamison reported favorably on the quarterly examination. It was reported by Mr. Hayes that the Athenaeum Committee had been com-

municated with, with a view fco secure the Athenaeum Hall as a class room, but the proposal was declined. It was also proposed that Messrs Jamison and Menzies be a sub-committee to draw up the wants of the school as to accommodation, and report die same to the Education Board. Messrs Harrop and Squires were appointed Visiting Committee for the ensuing month.
