PAY AS YOU GO.

A bit of good sensible advice from Josh Billings, done into English, entitled ">Pay as you go" :— " This little maxim has been at the service of the world for ages, supported by no particular pretensions to rhetoric, but brimful of practical philosophy and longitude of every human creature, and plebeian sense adapted to the latitude. It contains within its four monosyllables an analysis of wealth ; i; is fortune's stepping stone, and a letter of credit none can dispute where ever it gou3s. It is the right bower of economy and maid-of-honor to pleasure; it fills the day hours with quiet and drives the bailiff -from the night dream. Pay as you go, and you will know how fast .you are going, how far you have gone, and when it is time to stop ; tradesmen will bow when they meet you, and debt with its hungry wolftread will starve on your tracks. Pay as you go tempers luxury and chastens want — adds dignity to the poor man — wrongs none and is justice to all. Here is an antidote for much that is the philosopher's stone ; here is a tnotto for mankind ; here is a leaven for any sized lump. Xoung man, pay as you go ;' and when you get old you will not depart from it. Other virtues will certainly cluster around you. and when Nature hands in, her last bill, you will be all the better prepared to pay as you go.'*
