Tuapeka Times. AND GOLDFIELDS REPORTER AND ADVERTISER. THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 1873.

"MEASURES. NOT MEN."

We. agah} direct the attention of those who possess the necessary qualification, who are not already enrolled, to the fact, that unless they send in applications to have their names placed upon the electoral roll, before the 31st instant, the}'" will be deprived of the franchise for another year. Only eleven days now remain for this purpose. It is the custom of newspapers about this period, to dilate upon the importance of men placing their names u'poiv the electoral roll, and to beseech everyone not only to see that his own name is registered, but that his relatives, neighbors, andiu fact everybody else, takes the measures requisite to secure power to vo.te. We do not intend to insult our readers by following this course. Every intelligent man appreciates the importance of being able to exercise influence at elections ; those who do not know the value or care not for the. possession 1 iof a vote, do not deserve to have one, and their names are better off than on the electoral rolls. We may point out to our readers that it is exceedingly likely that there will be a dissolution of the House of Representati /es this year, and that should such prove the case, those not already possessing the franchise who notdo register before the 31st instant willnotbe able to vote at the election consequent. For general information we publish the qualifications entitling a man to have his name placed upon the roll : — Every man of the age of twenty-one years or upwards, having a freehold estate in possession, situate within the district for which the vote is t j be given of the clear value of fifty pounds, above all charges and incuuibrance, and of or to which he has been seised or. entitled, either at law or equity, for at least six calendar months next before the last registration of the electors, or having a leasehold estate in possession, situate within such district of the clear annual value of ten pounds held upon a lease which at the time of such registration shall have not less than three years to run, or having a leasehold estate so situate, and of such value as aforesaid, ofj which he has been^in possession for three years or upwards next before, such registration, or being a householder within such district, occupying a tenement within ■the limits of a town (to be proclaimed as such by the Governor of this Act) of the clear annual of- ten pounds, or without the limits of a town of the clear annual value of five pounds, and having resided therein six calendar months next before such registration as aforesaid, shall, if duly registered, be entitled to vote at the election of a member qi' members of the district.
