LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held on Monday evening. Present : The Mayor, and Crs. Hill, Hay-, Hayes, Meyer, Walker and Coverlid. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The correspondence waa read and dealt with as follows : — Letter from Inspector of Police in reply to a request for detention in Lawrence gaol of a prisoner sentenced at Tapanui to prisonment in Dunedin, stating that it was out of the" writer's power to comply with the request. Received. It was resolved, that the Mayor, Mr. Hay and Mr. Hill wait upon the Superintendent in reference to the matter. Letter from A. M. Parker, asking permission to build a small house on the point near Gabriels Gully, where the Chinaman's hut is situated. Received, and referred to Public Works Committee, with power to act. Letter .from Cormack and Nicoll, asking the Public Works Committee to visit the locality, to report upon the formation of Stranraer-street. Received-, and request granted. Letter from E". 'Fowler. Received. Accounts as follows were referred to the Finance Committee : — T» Buckley, £8 ; R. Heritage, 12s. 6d. ; G. B. King, £4 43. ; King and Kelso, £1 Is. ; Mills, Dick & Co. 10s. ; T. Barnett, £.15.0 a. 6d.; Phoenix Water Co., £26; D. Whittet, £15 16s. 6d. The latter tw.o accounts were also referred to the Public Works , Committee. 1-03. 6d. was voted to the Town Clerk for assisting Mr. Simpson in laying off the Beaumont road. Mr. Hay expressed his opinion that Mr Simpson's survey of .the Beaumont road confined the creek 'to much. On the motion of Mr. Hay, seconded by Cr. Hill, the- Town Clerk was instructed to keep an account of the days when the dam was empty, for the purpose of deducting the time there was no water from, the account of' the Phoenix Company. Cr. Walker remarked that the Town Clerk should also take a note of the days the water was run to waste by Corporation officials. The Mayor read a protest signed by several residents of Ross Place, protesting against the Chinese mining, at the b>ckof
the town, as their operations were flooding the protestors' property. Peceived and referred -to the Public Works Committee. A list of the leases sold by auction by Mr. Hay was read. The amount realised was £23 13s. Qd. The commission charged by Mr. Hay was 10 per cent. , and his account was £2 7s. Referred to the Finance Committee. The Town Clerk laid on the table a list of the receipts and expenditure from July Ist to December 31st, 1872. The Mayor said the plans and specifications for the Beaumont road would be sent up by Monday next. Cr. Flay moved that tenders be called at once for the construction of the Beaumont road. I Cr. Hayes seconded the motion, which was carried. It was resolved that a deposit of 5 per cent, be required from tenderers for the | work. Cr, Hay drew attention to the approaches to the culvert in lona-s'reet. Referred to Public Works Committee with power to act. Cr. Coverlid protested against the expenditure, as Mr, Pyke had' promised to make the approaches if the Counoil made the culvert. The Mayor stated that Mr. Blair had inspected the dam and promised shortly to furnish a report on the best means of filtering the water. Cr Coverlid gave notice that at next meeting, he would move that a main be laid as far as the Hospital. Or. Meyer drew attention to the state of the channel in Ross Place. Referred to the Public Works Committee. Cr. Hill gave notice that at next meeting, he would move that the Public Works Committee bring up a report on the extension of the mains to where they do not now reach. The Council then adjourned.
