The monthly cleaning up of the Gabriels Gully Quartz^Mining Co. takes place on Saturday next. ■ Owing to the Phoenix reservoir being empty, operations in, nearly all the claims at Wetherstones, are compulsonly.suspendod. Some plums growji by Mr. Hopkins, Evans Flat, have been forwarded to our office, and duly consumed. They ate of exceediugly large size, of splendid'flavor, and speak volumes for the soil in which they were grown, and -for the care bestowed in their cultivation.

D, Morrison, praying that all applications for agricultural leases pn Wetherstones Flat, be refused. The Tokomairiro annual races take place on Thursday and Friday, the 6th and 7th March. The handicap for the. Switzers Handicap appears in our advertising columns. The spirited sporting men of Switzers have come out splendidly this year, and we trust that the prizes they offer will be well competed for one on the 13th and T4th March, and that a large assemblage of spectators will be ou the course. The first annnal pic-nic of the Tuapeka Sunday Schools will be held on the Lawrence racecourse, to-morrow afternoon. List Friday evening. ATaut of space precludes us from more than barely noticing the entertainment. We must content ourselves by stating the benificfare acquitted himself in the manner which has made him such a general public favorite, and that those who assisted him also performed their various parts Ito the satisfaction of the audience. Encores > were repeatedly demanded to the songs given, and other manifestations of approval wcra emitted by those assembled. Mr. Muirhead during the course of the evening thanked those present for their attendance in a few well chosen words. A PIC-NIC for all th© Waitahuna children is. to be held there to-day. It was intended that they should join the Lawrence children tomorrow, but the fear of whooping cough makes, the parents unwilling that they should come to, Lawrence. The making of the road dojaai Hurrays Flat is being vigorously proceeded with by the contracters, Math, eson Bros., and by those engaged by the Government. About twenty teams are! employed, and the contractors expect to finish, in six or eight weeks. About 130 chains are still not contracted for — the only tender re-, ceived being considerably over the provincial engineer's estimate for the work. If this park is not completed before the winter sets in, the. rest of the work will be rendered to a great degree useless— the missing link will render the chain of little working value. The gravelling of the road from Duff's store to the Camp is also, being proceeded with. Four teams are employed' on this job, and it will be finished in about six weeks. Mr. Hammond, well known in the Teviot district, has built a large house, intended for a, hotel, on his farm in Murray's Fla.t^ The Provincial Council will meet late in, April. PROSPECTING operations are being pushed for- ■ ward on the claim of the Wetherstones Reef Quartz Mining Company. The working manager reported to the shareholders on the 21st inst. as follows : --Since commencing work I have been driving along the course of the reef, which runs east and west, butasyet, I have not seen any, gold. There is, however, a well defined, rubbly reef.consistingofquartzjspurssindslate. Eighteen inches of this formation have been taken for the back of the drive. Since beginning, about 38 feet has been driven through a blue and grey slate, intermixed with quartz, spurs. This ground has been lost ; and where 'work is now, proceeding- is, composed of blue slate, intermixed with milk white spurs running horizon- • tally, which, I am. inclined to think, will probably make another reef running ir. the op-, posite direction.
