LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held on Monday evening. Present: Crs. Meyer, Hill, Hay, Hayes, and Walker. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Meyer was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : — Letter from A. Willis, Under- Secretary, stating that the Government had instructed tl c Engineer of Roads and Works to prepare plans and specifications for : the formation of the Beaumont Road. Received. Letter from H. Vye, ask- ; ing for an extension of the time allowed ,by his contract for fencing the reservoir. Received, and the request granted. Letter from Bernard M'Neil and party, asking permission to put' a ; dam in Gabriels Gully, 20 yards bei low the footbridge. Received, and referred to Public Works Committee. The following accounts were referred to the Finance Committee and Public : Works Committee :— H. Pyke, £8 os. : 6d. ; John Lyons, £1 10s. The following account was referred to the Finance and Governor's . Reception Committee : —R. Grieve, [ refreshments supplied to Governor \ and suite and Town Councillors at Blue Spur, £1 Is. The Town Clerk stated that Mr. Pyke, the Resident Magistrate, was of opinion that the temporary license fees paid by hotelkeepers, whose houses were not within the municipality, for permission to sell liquors on the racecourse, were not payable to the Town Council, but to the Government. He, the Town Clerk, entertained a different opinion, and had requested the Resident Magistrate not to cend the fees referred to to the Provincial Treasurer, but that gentleman had stated that he must do so. In reference also to the license fees for drays also, he and the Resident Magistrate differed ; the latter holding that draymen residing beyond the municipality were not liable to pay any license fee to the Corporation. He, the Town Clerk, held that a drayman plying his avocation within the town, should pay the license wherever he resided. The Finance Committee's report, stating that the following payments had been made, was read and received : — Bathing Committee, £5; H. A. Robinsoß, £2 Bs. ? G. Burrows, £3' Is. ; D. Whittet, £2- 6s. lOd. Cr. Hay inquired what the Finance Committee had done about the witnesses'" expenses in the case in which the Corporation was- concerned. The Town Clerk explained that he had Been Judge Gray,. as be had been instructed. The accounts for the witnesses' ' expenses were referred back to the Finance Committee. The report was adopted. The Town (jlerk said he was unable to lay the balance sheet on the table ; and that he also was unable to bring up a report of the sale of Corporation reserve, in consequence of not having received the account sales. Cr. Hay reported that the leases had been disposed of at satisfactory prices. In answer to Cr. Hay, the Town Clerk said he had not takea any steps lately to collect the rates. He had been ill of late, but at next meeting he hoped to lay a satisfactory report before the Council. Ch Hay reported that the- municipal "works in hands were progressing satisfactorily. , The Chairman drew the attention $jf the Public Works Committee to the

state of the drain in Ross Place The Public Works Committee was instructed to see to the matter. Cr. Hay drew attention to the channelling at Peel-street corner of ltoss Place. The Public Works Committee was directed to attend to the matter. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
