ALEXANDRA.

(From our own Correspondent.) Jan. 6. Mining matters has been been at a standstill for the past few weeks, owing to the scarcity of water throughout the district, but there is now a slight change in the weather, which will increase the supply a little. The ball in aid of the Alexandra school gave great satisfaction in every way, and great praise is due to tho promoters, Mr. J. C. Chappie and Mr. G. ilatelifle. Mr. Wm. .Robertson in his old capacity of M C. carried out the programme in the best of styles ; and likewise credit must be accorded to the Duns tan Brass Band for the able manner in which they performed their duties on that evening. Great preparations were made for the arrival of the Governor on Monday, the 13th inst., a splendid spread was laid iv the library, and flags flew from every corner. The arrangements, including the Mayor and Foresters, were carried out in splendid order. It wound up in the usual way. The Governor honored Mr. J. R. Kemp of the Cape Broom Hotel, Bald Hill Flat, on his way up by laying the corner stone of his new building, which he did in the orthodox style. A local jockey club is about to be organised in the Uald Hill Flat district. The races are to come off in March. Mr. M'Ginnis and a number of other miners are taking a mo3t active part in the matter. Mr. Hugh Crossan of the Spear Grass Flat Hotel, offers to form and clear the race course free of charge. It is mooted that a meeting should be held at Hugh Crossan's on the first day of February to consider it over ; its success is certain. Having so many half blood horses in the district induces the owners to always take an interest iv racing. The Gorge Creek Water Race Company are rapidly progressing. The flutning at the Gorge Creek is completed, and the water conveyed to Coal Creek, which was considered an impossibility if we took notice of our local paper. The other section from Coal Creek to White's will be completed in a few weeks, when the water will have a free course throughout.
