The Dunedin Artillery, Dunel'n Naval, Scottish, North Dunedin, and Portobello Rifles, and Bat'alion Band and Staff tird the second stajie on Jan. 25 — 400, SUO, and GOO yards. The weath r was c'.e ;r and fine ; at the 600 yards the wind was strong from the left rear.
Twenty-four men h ive qualified u« to the presant ; sixteen men have to tire off.

Those of the head-quaiters division of the Canterbury Volunteers who have succeeded in making the number of points to entitle them to qualify as «'olon : al re resentatives are Lieuti '"rai/, Christchurch Artillery; Corp, Fox, Cbristohurch Artillery ; Private Cohn, City Guards ; and Co. p. Trevalla, No. 2 Engineers. The Ly'tellon Times, in noticing the competitions by the Northern corps of that Province for representatives at the Co'onial prize firing, remarks : —It is rteep'y to be regretted that small as the number of comi etitors was on the first, it was still smaller on the second. Volunteering has certain'y not been supported with much spirit in the norther 1 part cf the Province during the la-^t twelve months ; but despite this, the natural presumption v/ould have b n en that on this all-important o^ea.-ian the old marksmen of the respective corps could bdrelitd upon to support the honor of Canterbury. The disappointment is a serious one, and all the more would be expected from the Chr'stchurch and Heathcote volunteer*, who under the circumstances ought to make additional exertiwn to prevent the Province acquiring the credit of being badly represented at the great prizs meeting of the year. Only two men fired at the secoid stage, ami neither of them attained the miiiimum of 70 points. s
