Our worst fears with regard to the new Waste Lands Board have been exceeded. A selection of men more unsatisfactory to the province, and inimical to the interests they are appointed to conserve, could scarcely have been made by the most illiberal antisettlement government that ever ruled a province. It is scarcely credible yet, nevertheless true, that the goldfields are not at all represented in the newWaste Lands Board. We have not a single word to say against the personal repute of the gentlemen appointed members of the Board — their characters stand far above suspicion. But tbeir ! training, their past history, their class sympathies, and their own interests, renders those of them not entirely unfit to occupy the position to which they have been called, the very last persons who should have been appointed. Mr. Butterworth's services will be worse than useless, as his vote will be at the command of the member representing the Executive, Mr. Tolraie. Messrs. Tolmie, Strode, and Morris are all deeply interested in pastoral pursuits, in fact, may be considered
