LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

A. cpecird meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held on Tuesday ftfterjioon. Present : The Mayor, and Crs. Coverlid, Hill, Jseyer, and gayeg. The minutes of the previous meeting $rere read and confirmed. A letter, from Mr. Bastings, Provincial Secretary for Works, requesting the Council' to take in band the ponstruction of the B.eauraont road, and also to name the sum they would Require for that purpose, was read and received, and a sun) was named py the Council. "The correspondence was dealt with as follows: — Letter from A. E. Livingston. Received. Letter from $he hon. sec. Baths committee, requesting the Council to subsidise subscriptions, fqr the construction of a bath. Received, and a sum notexpeeding five pounds voted for the purpose stated. Letter from J. Thomson, calling attention to abandoned shafts in Oban-street. Referred to Public Works Committee, fetter from Inspector of Nuisances, relative to the Chinese workings in. Gabriels Greek' Referred to Public Works Committee. Letter from A. Willis, gtating the Provincial Government were unable to grant the Corporation prison labor. Received. In connexion with this matter, the Mayor stated that the local justices, had petitioned $he Government to reconsider their decision. Application from J. Hill to jease a Municipal reserve. Referred to Reserves Committee. Letter from W. E. Farrer, complainirg of annoyance by the man employed to water J;he streets. Referred to Public Works Committee. Cr. Coverlid moved the adop? tion of the bye-laws as advertised in the Tuabe?a Ti^es. Cr. Hayes seconded the tnotjon, t^h\eb was carried. The Mayor mentioned that he had Waited upon the Government with respect tQ the petitions againsu closing ihe streets on the Recreation ground. The government were willing to keep open Harrington-street. It was resolved that steps be taken to oppose closing of Harrington-sweet. An account from R. W. Nichols for £1 !165., was referred to the Finance and Public Works Committees. The Mayor mentioned the result of the case M'Ooy v. Corporation of Lawrence, and, at bis suggestion, it was resolved to pay Mr. M'Coj for any of the leases prepared by him, that misjht hereafter be used. Or. Hill moved : " That the sum of $15. be expended for carrying out certain works in Harrington-street, recommended by the Public Works Committee." Seconded by Cr. Hayes and carried. Cr. Hill, in the absence of Cr. Hay, moved : " That 12 chains of footpath 4 feet in width be constructed on the south side of Irvine-street." The motion was seconded by Cr. Coverlid and carried. * On the motion of Cr. Coverlid, feeqnded by Cr. Hayes, it was resolved that a culvert should be constructed \$ X^idtnore-str ;et. ""* „•*-■<&'. Meyer drew attention to the state of the clmnnel in Ross Place, ffhe matter was referred to the Public Committee. On- the -.motion of Cr. Hayes, the |*üblic "WifcH*' Commi't-e wore empowered to employ labor to water the streets. Cr. Hill moved : " That a Water Committee, to consist of the Mayor, Ore," Hayes, Coverlid, and the mover, be appointed to collect information as to the beat means of cleansing the V*aier, and to report upon the extension of the pipes." Cr. Hayes seconded the motion, which was carried. Toe. Public Works Committee was instructed to have the reservoir Gr. Hill gave notice that at next meeting he would move that the Town Clack receive ten per cent on all eiwSk moneys collected for auctioneer's liceußfiiSj *dog taxes, &c. The Council then adjourned.
