EXTRAORDINARY AND FATAL CASE OF LOCK-JAW.
We regret to have to record the death, recently, from lock-jaw, of George Seymour, aged 20, at the .residence (in Albert street) of his father, Captain Seymour, of the cutter Alarm, r.under very distressing circumstances. The following are the particulars of the sad occurrence ; — It appears that some ten days ago tho deceased was engaged stock-driving at Mangawai, when he accidentally struck himself with the lash of his whip over the left eye. He took no notice of this at the time — in fact, the " flick " hardly left a mark. A day or two afterwards he came to town, when the wound got much worse ; and on Tuesday morning it was thought advisable to send for Dr. Hooper, who at once saw that all the symptoms of tetanus had set in. Shortly afterwards, the young man's jaw set as firm as a vice ; and in this condition he remained until six o'clock last evening, when, despite everything that could be done to alleviate him, death put an end to his sufferings. The deceased was a fine young man, well-beloved by all who knew him. We have not learned whether an inquest will be held upon the body. — New Zealand Herald.
The Governor will arrive in Dunedin ou the 21st inst. instead of the 20tn, and it is definitely arranged he will land at Rattraystrret jetty, arriving there in the Luna.
We believe it is intended to invite the Governor and his suite to a citizens' ball during hia visit to the Province. As soon as the arrangements in connection with the reception are completed, his Worship the Mayor will invite the co-operation of a number of the leading citizens to carry out this object.— Star.
