THE VOLUNTEERS.

The preliminary competitions for company representatives to take part in the firing for Provincial representatives at the Colonial Prize Firing commenced on the 9th. The Naval Brigade will have three competitions ; the first at 200, 500, and 600 yards ; the second at 300, 500, and 600 yards ; and the third at 400, 500, and 600 yards ; five shots at each range in each competition ; and the five highest aggregate scorers at the three competitions will be company representatives. The following were the scores made ;— •

The Guards' first stage of the competition for company representatives came off on the 9fch, at their own range (Wakari), when some good shooting was made. Notwithstanding the baffling hot wind that blew from the N.W., twenty-one men fired at 200 and 300 yards ; ten shots at each range ; Hythe positiou at 200, and any position at 300. The following are the scores of those who made centres and over :—: —

The Artillery held their first competition for representatives in the Colonial prize firing at the Anderson's Bay Range on D<:c. 12, on the following conditions, viz., five shots at 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 ; class targets ; Hythe position at the first range, any position at the others ; Government rifles and ammunition, and no sighting shots. The weather was very bad for rifle shooting, a gale blowing at the first two ranges, and the scores are therefore medium only. Gunner D. Reid is highest scorer on this occasion with 77 points. There are to be two other competitions, to be fired on the same conditions. The following are the ten highest scores :—: —

The return match between the Waikari and Portobello Rangers took place at the butts of the former company Dec. 12th The Portobello Company were winners in the first match by 32 points ; but this time, as the scores show, the victory was obtained, after a very close contest, by their opponents, who win by 14 points. The weather yesterday was very unfavorable for good shooting, as the wind came in squalls from the left front. The following are the scores :—: —
