A correspondent writes us that Mr. J. K. Kemp of Bald Mill Flat, Alexandra Boad, has commenced the election of *. new hotel, far more extensive and substantial thanthe one he now occupies. The building will be 60 x 46 ft. with walls 12ft. high, with a slate roof. There can be no doubt' when the building i» completed, it will not have its equal in the district. Mr. Kemp's, large garden is looking beautiful, and his fruit trees are laden with' fruit.

The concert in aid of the fpnds of the Church of England, Lawrence, will be h«ld in the Athenseuiu this evening. The programme bus been before the public for iome days, and from the well-known abilities of those amateurs who are to take part in it, ws venture to predict that it will be "carried out and' with spirit. The fact of many, tickets having already been disposed 'pf, : augurs 'well for the success of the entertainment.

Mb. 'Bbogden's Chinese .venture has proved a failure. • The Celestials employed on the dutha .'railway have conclusively proved thein«eltea f not to be worth half the wages, of .Caucasian navvies, and consequently, ' received a pressing invitation to leave the works, which they felt. obliged; to accept. If Messrs Brogden, or whoever is acting for them, had taken the trouble to inquire, before they contracted for the employment of Chinese workmen, the value of such labor, they would have saved , soir.e money. In California, repeated experiments have proved that Chinamen are worth nothing as navvies. A false estimate has been formed of their capabilities of laboring, on the goldfields,' owing to the perfect organization which prevails among their companies, anjl the long hours , they , *or k. , - Placed.*longside the hardy Weatejti) races, they are distanced.
