The West Coast Natives have sent an invitation to the Governor to meet them at a united meeting at the Manawatu Gorge, on Wednesday or Thnrsdaj', when thpy will bid him farewell. All the assembled tribes will take part in the proceedings. A general amnesty to the Natives will be declared in a few days. The principle has been agreed to by the Government in Cabinet. The details have not yet been decided upon. November 25. It is understood that Captain Johnstone brings the Dacotah down the coast. Timartj, November 23. An inquest was hold yesterday on the body of Murdoch M'Leau, who was found drowned in the Washdyke Creek. The jury returned an open verdict. There is little doubt that M'Leau met his death by his own act. It would appear that he attached a piece of pig iron, weighing 721 b, to his neck with flax, and weded with the iron upon his shoulder into the deep water where his body was found. , An inquest was commenced to-day upon the body of a man found in a creek near Mount Horrible, and who was named George j Blackall. The inquest was adjourned until j Monday for further evidence. The evidence already taken tends to show that he was accidentally drowned, ide had been in the water for a month. Auckland, November 25. MrWm. Kelly has been elected M.P.C. for the Pensioner Settlements. The Opera Troupe has been engaged at LIOU a night to play at the Choral Hall for six nights. They leave for the South on the 3rd of December, playing one night at Nelson, one night at Wellington, and seasons at Christchurch and Dunedin. Wellingt-n, November 26. The Independent finds fault with the management regarding immigration, and says it is badly and indolently administered. Christchukch, November 26 A fire occurred in the heart of the city last night. It commenced at the shop of Dunkeilv, the hatter, in High street. The buildings were very crowded, inflammable, and old, but the Fire Brigade worked so splendidly that only thirty feet of frontage was destroyed, and but fifty feet of frontage gutted '» he steam fire-engines were throwing two jets each in twelve minutes after the alarm bell rang, and all the danger was over in half-an-hour. 'J he way in which the progress of the fire was arrested was marvellous, reflectini; the highest credit on the Brigade, which worked smoothly, expeditiously and well, exciting universal eulogy. The Volunteer Fire Police also rendered good service, jhe shops destroyed were Dunkerley's, whose stock was uninsured, aud valued at L 20 0; M'Callum, watchmaker, stock valued at L2OOO, insured in the' South British for L2OO, and about L2OO worth saved (these buildings were insured conjointly for Ll5O in the Alliance and L2OO in the South British, whilst their estimated value was L 703 ); Brouncker's, tobacconist, gutted stock uninsured, but all saved except LIOO worih ; Fisher's store gutted, stock valued at LI4OO, insured in the Pacific for L2OO, in the Nsw Zealand for L4OO, and only L7OO worth saved ; Brouncker's and Fisher's shops were valued at LIOOO, anil were insured in the Victoria office for L 550. The premises of Mr Bonnington, stationer and music-seller, were gutted ; the stock, worth L2OOO, was insured for LSOO in the Pacific ; LI OOO worth was saved. The buildings, valued at LSOO, were not insured. The stocks of Prebble (hairdresser), Percy (bootmaker), Raphael (money-lender), Middle and Week (bootmakers), and Gardiner (pianoforte maker), were damaged by removal, but the buildings were saved.
