PORT CHALMERS. November 25.
The Geelong, at 4.15 p.m., was towing the Sword Fish up to a discharging berth. The barque Freetrader, and the brigantine Sword Fi»h, expected from Hobart Town, were signalled at the Heads this afternoon. The brig Foam from Mauritius to Lyttelton spoke the barque Woodland on the 4th inst., seven montha out with 300 barrels sperm oil. A large number of whales was seen on the New Zealand coast. November 26. The p.s. Samson for Oamaru, and the barque Glenshee, for Newcastle, sailed this forenoon. The barque Freetrader, from Hobart Town, signalled at the Heads yesterday, proceeded to Oamaru. The s.s. Beautiful Star was last night towed from Dunedin by the steam-tug Geelong, and this morning entsred the Graving Dock for cleaning .and painting. The brigantine Swordhsh, from Hobart Town, was last evening berthed alongside of the railway jetty, to discharge a quantity of piles and other timber. Captain Harvey reports sighting the brig Chanticleer, from Hobart Town, for Lyttelton, off the Nuggets, on the 24th inst. The topsail schooner Maid of Otago arrived last evening at the Heads, and this morning 1 eat up anil anchored between the Islands and Observation Point. Captain Bain reports sailing from Havelock ou the 19th inst., j with 45,000 feet timber consigned to Messrs Turnbull and Co. ; experienced light northerly winds ; put into Oamaru, but not being able to discharge there, came on to Dunedin. She reports the schooners Jane Haunah and <.'ora loading at Havelock, the former fo Dunedin, the latter for Oamaru ; also the schooner Crest of the Wave and the ketches Redcliffe and Fanny were yesterday discharging at Oanaru. The s.s. Taranaki, Captain Wheeler, left Manukau on the 20th inst, at 1 p.m. ; arrived at Taranaki on the 21st, at 5 a.m. ; left at 8 ; arrived at Nelson at 10.30 ; left on the 22nd, at 1.30; arrived at Picton at 10 p.m. ; left on the 23rd, at 3 a.m. ; arrived at Wellington, at 7 .'i.m. ; left at midnight, and arrived at the Kaikouras on the 24th, at 10 a.m. ; sailed at 9 p.m. 5 arrived »fc Lyttelton on the 25th, at 6 a.m. ; sailed at 2 p.m., and arrived at Port Chalmers at 0 30. Fine •weather and light variable winds from the Mannkau to Lyttelton ; thence strong head winds to arrival, when she was berthed alongside the Railway Jetty. Her passengers and mails were brought to Dunedin by the p.s. Peninsula at 3 p.m. November 27. The ketch Eliza M'Pheo arrived last evening from Catlin's River. The s.s. Maori, for Oamaru, and the s.s. Storm Bird for the Bluff, sailed Inst evening, the former at 9 o'clock and the later a 10. The s.s. Wallabi arrived at 5. 30 this morning, and steamed alongside the ship May Queen, to tranship cargo. H.M.S. Dido, Captain Cox Chapman, weighed anchor on Saturday, at 2 p.m., and steamed out of harbor. The vessel will proceed on a ten days' cruise, and will afterwards visit Dunedin. During the Dido's stay in harbor she haa been open to public inspection. A large number of persons have visited her, and have been most courteously received by all on board. On Tuesday last the lower deck of the ship was transformed into a splendid ball-room, and a select and fashionable party enjoyed themselves thoroughly at an afternoon dance given by Captain Chapman. On Friday some excellent gun practice was made. H.M.S. Dido will again visit our harbor ou her return from the South.— Lyttelton Times, Nov. 25. November 2S. The p.s. Samson arrived last night from Oamnrn, and sailed again at an early hour this morning for Timaru. The fore and-aft schooner supposed to be the Colonist, from the coast, arrived this morning, and passed up to Dunedin. The s.s. Wallabi, that arrived yesterday from the Bluff under temporary repairs, was yesterday placed in the Floating Dock for survey, which was made yesterday, and we understand that substantial repairs were recommended. The shipping in the harbor to-day presented a gay appearance, most of the vessels being dressed with flags from truck to rail. The Harbor Company's and other steamers and the Railway Company displayed colors. Moat of the flagstaff's on shore were gaily decorated with bunting, and at noon a salute of guns was tired from the J. N. Fleming. Other salutes were fired throughout the day in recognition of the marriage of Captain Stevens, of the ship E. P. Bouverie. The barque Sara Drefus, 332 tons, Captain Bennison, arrived to day, Avith a cargo of 6G47 pockets of sugar and 400 empty mats for Dunedin ; also 5327 pockets of" sugar and 200 empty mats for Lyttelton. The whole of the cargo, consisting of white sugars, is consigned to Messrs Dalgety, Nichols, and Co. The Sara left Port Louis on October 16, kept well to the northward, and experienced tine favorable winds ; made the Solanders on the 24th inst., at 4 a.m. Otago Heads were passed during the night, when southerly winds and the strong northerly set of the current drove the vessel to the northward. A change of wind enabled her to reach the Heads this morning, when she was boarded^by Mr Pilot Kelly, who this forenoon brought her up under canvas to a convenient discharging berth, after a smart passage of 42 days. November 29. Fore and aft schooner from Coast passed up. The p. s. Golden Age was laid up last night at Dunedin for periodical overhaul. The s.s. Taranaki sailnd last evening for Northern Ports. The ketch Huou Belle sailed last evening for the Molyneux. ' The schooner Result arrived last evening with a cargo of producs from Waikouaiti and passed up to Dunedin. The p.s. Samson, from Timaru, on arrival at 11 a.m. to-day, was placed alongside of the ship J. N. Flemming to tranship cargo, and will sail for Oamaru this evening. We are informed that Bradsbaw's party at Waikouaiti succeeded in capturing on the 26th inst. a black whale, which is estimated to yield two tuns of oil. At four o'clock this afternoon the barque Sara Drefus was berthed alongside the Railway Jctby, opposite the E. P. Bouverie. The cutter Jane, from Shag Point ; the ketch Redcliffe, from Oamaru ; and a fore-and-aft coasting schooaer, name unknown, arrived aud passed up to Dunedin this forenoon. Last evening, a number of guns were discharged in the harbor, and a brilliant display of rockets and blue lights, shown by the ships J. N. Fleming and E. P. Bouverie, in honor of the nuptials of Capt. Stevens, who has been engaged in the Otago trade for the last eight years, in the ships Star of Tasmania, Otago, Robert Henderson, and E. P. Bouverie, during which time he has gained the respect and esteem of those with whom he has been associated in the discharge of his duties. November 30. The vessels in port yesterday were :— H.M.S. A large vessel was seen off the Ocean Beach on Sunday morning, but up to the time of our reports leaving* Port Chalmers there was no appearance of her at the He ids.
The p.s. Samson passed through the Port at 3.30 a.m. on Sunday, on her way to town, with excursionists from < >amaru.
The ketch Eliza M'Fee, from Catlin's River, and Ihe Affiance, from Kakanui, both passed up to town yesterday morning. The ship Bulwark, from Auckland, with railway material, part of original cargo from London, was signalled at the Heads at 5 p.m. yesterday. The Geelong went down to tow her up. The Harbor Co.'s steamer Maori was signalled yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, and steamed alongside the Port Chalmers jetty, at 12 o'clock; discharged 60 sheep and 36 pigs. Captain Malcolm reports leaving Lyttelton Jast Friday, at 4 p.m. ; and arrived at Akaroa at 8.30 ; took in cargo, and arrived at Timaru at 9 a.m., and left at 12 o'clock on Saturday night ; called at Oamaru, and landed passengers ; and arrived at Fort Chalmers as above.
The schooner Jane Sarah passed up the harbor at mid-day on her way to Danedin. Captain Deuchrass reports leaving Havelock ou the 23r.1 ; she experienced calms and variable winds the whole passage. She brinßs a full cargo of timber. The Captain kindly gave us Lytteltou files to the 26th. The barque Eleanor was towed to aea on Saturday moruiug by the tug Geelon", She leaves here in ballast for a cargo of coals from Newcastle.
The Dido, which arrived in Port on Saturday afternoon, is in model the counterpart of H.M.* 5 . Blanche, which visited this port with Prince Alfred. The following is a list of her officers :— Captain, W. C. Chapman ; lieutenants, Ducat, Kaox, and Martin ; navigating lieutenant, Pettry ; surgeon, Comrie ; assistant surgeon, Good ; paymaster, Robinson; assistant paymaster, Bray ; chief engineer, Swan ; assistant engineers, Guttrtdge and Feak ; sub-lieutenants, Coker, Outfield. Harvey, and O'Callaghan ; midshipmen, Biddulph and Kean. The armament of the Dido consists of six 64poundcr shunt guns and two seven-inch 64pounder rifled guns, Woolwich pattern ; and her engines are 350 horse-power. Captain Chapman, her commander, is a brother of col. Chapman, of the 18th Royal Irish. She loft Lyttelton on tho 23rd November, and had very pleasaut weather, with light winds. Her commission is dated from the 20th April, 1871. She arrived off the Coast of Africa in the month of December, 1871 ; called at the Cape, and left on the 16th May, 1872 ; arrived at Sydney 3rd of July, left again for Wellington 3rd of August, and arrived on the 12th ; lefc on the 26th of October for Lyttelton, and arrived on the 28th ; left on the 30th for Akaroa, and arrived on the 31st ; called into Lyttelton again, and arrived here as above. The Dido was thrown open to visitors yesterday.
