THE LATE MR. B. M'SWINEY.

It is our melancholy duty this week to chronicle the death of Mr. Bryan M'Swiney, of Wetherstones. The deceased had suffered for a lengthened period from a lingering illness, upon which, towards the beginning of last week, a violent and dangerous complaint supervened. The latter: .attack rapidly sapped his vital energies, and he departed this life on the morning of Friday, the 31st inst. Mr. M'Swiney, some days .before the fatal termination of his illness, was fully aware of his approaching demise, and prepared himself for that sad event by devout attention to the ministrations of the Rev. Father Larkins, who was constantly in attendance, offering him spiritual counsel, and performing the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Deceased was fifty five years of age. The funeral took place on Sunday, the 25th instant. From all parts of the district, and from long distances, came men who had known deceased, and appreciated his sterling worth, to pay the last sad tribute of respect due by men to a departed brother. The mournful procession which followed his remains to their last resting place in the Lawrence Cemetery, numbered over four hundred souls. The burial service of the Church of Rome was performed in an impressive manner by the Rev. Father Larkin.

Mr. M'Swiney was a native of Cork. He was a civil engineer, but did not follow his profession in the colony. For the Jaat ten years, he was engaged in storekeeping at Wetheratones. In all public matters he took an active part, and prominently advocated the opinions of the Church he belonged to on the Education Question. In private life Ills unassuming demeanor and generous disposition endeared him to all who had the pleasure of meeting him ; while his unswerving integrity won for him the respect and regard of all. .His death will leave a blank, which will be hard indeed to fill.

The only relative left by Mr. M'Swiney in the colony is his sister, who resided with him for several years.
