EFFECTS OF THE MAINE LIQUOR LAW.
(From the Spectator. )
Speaking of the new Maine liquor law which lately came into operation, Consul Murray, in his report on the trade, commerce, atid navigation of Maine during the year 1871, just issued, says that the result of his many years' experience in that State is that the liquor law has thoroughly demoralised it for many yenrs pa-t. It ha- led to domestic and public hypocrisy and secret drinking On public o casions and dinners water alone has been frequently placed on the table, but every variety of wines and liquors has been given to the guests in private rooms both beiore ai>d after the repast. Liquors of the worst and most poisonous qualities are and vriil be at nil brtz^rds introduced into the .larger cities ; and it will be very difficult fur the sheriff and his officers to continue the vigilance they have beuun with. >> ew means of evading the law will be di covered every day, and'they will become dishearten* d. It is firmly believed, adds Consul Murray, that the general irritation and inconvenience experienced from the new law will have a powerful influence on the coming State elections, and, should it be repealed, a re : action may take place which will have a stili further disastrous effect upon the morals of the State.
