THE VOLUNTEERS.

A match between the No. 1 Company (City tiuards) and the Anderson's Bay division of the JSaval Brigade, nine men aside, was fired .November 5, at the Ocean Beach range ; the match being the result of a challenge from the Naval to No. 1 Company. The weather was favorable for shooting, there being no wind. The conditions were —Ranges, 200, 500, and 600 yards ; no sighting shuts ; tive shots at each range ; Wimbledon targets. As will be seen by the scores attached the Guards are the winners by 32 points. The tenth man on either side not putting in an appearance at the commencement of the match, it was agreed to go on without t*.em.

The third competition for the Prize Cup presented to the North Dunedin Company by Captain Copeland and Lieut. Leary, took place at the Pelichet Bay range on the sth, fortunately a very good morning for shooting. The ranges were 200, 500, and 600 yards ; five shots at each ; Wimbledon targets. About 20 men competed, their respective scores being about the usual average. Sergt. Pollock was the winner on this occasion, a total of 44 points ; closely hauled by ; Vol. A'iau, who scored equal with him almost throughout the match, till the last shot, when Pollock got a bull's-eye and Allan a centre. Vol. Douglas, who was allowed to fire at Sawyer's Bay range, and who was the winner on the first competition for the cup, was also very close with a score of 42.

The Dunedin Volunteer Artillery on the 7th fired a return match against the Bank of England Rifle Association, upon the same condition as the last, viz., 7 shots at ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yards, Wimbledon position and targets, Government rifles, ammunition, &c. The weather -was all thai could be desired, and the average made by the Artillery, though a medium one, was sufficient to beat their antagonists by 80 points. Lieut. Muiris the highest scorer •with 64, followed by Gunner Cato with 61, while for the Bankers, Sergt. Peck heads their list with 55. The following are the scores of the respective teams : —
