DUNEDIN.
(From our own Correspondent.)
The projected visit of his Excellency, the Govprnov and Lady Bowen is beginning to cause a little talk in the city; and when the probable 'date of his arrival is knownj no doubt energetic steps will be taken to give him a suitable welcome. • Otago is not, as a rule, behindhand in her display of loyal ty when, august personages honor her \vitli a »visifc, and his ExedlpiK-v and Lady will doubtless lev-eive a wclt{ouiel« i Htting their rank and the high jiositioir Sir George Bowen hohls, as the representative of Her JMajfsty ..the Queen, in J^ew Zealand- It is inteuded, if the-vice-regal party arrive, in time, to ask the Governor 1,0 open the Port Chalmers Railway. Although there have been several r'ps made by one engine, with single carriages attached, yet ifc is con-
sidered that a public ceremonial shou'd take plaoe on the occasion of the real opening of- the line, and it will give additiounl .eclat' to the proceedings if his Excelljncy is present to perform'the Geremonv. - .
Ihere seems to be a revolution brew-, ing in connection with the .newspaper literature of Dunedin, mainly .caused by the lo ig felt and increasing dissatibfaction with the morning daily which has for so Jong a" time had the field to itself. • Opposition has often been, talked of, bub owing to want of capital, and the difficulty of inducing people- with that necessary article to come fcrvard and assist, nothing tangible, has been come to in the matter. Hfow, however, there seeius a fair prospect of' the " I). dly Times " having one, if not two, "rivals in the field before many months have elapsed. For some time past steps have been quietly, but systematically taken to, form a company with a capital of, I believe, £10,003 ; and I understand that shares representing about- three-quarters of the amount have been taken up, with a fair prospect of the remainder going off. - This is a good foundation io ■ begin upon, Kncl if the result is the foundatibh of a good, readable paper — whiclr J the'" 3 ll Daily Times " generally cannot lay any claim to' being— success in- the end is, I'tlxink, a) mast certain. The second* oppositionis a morning issue which the proprietor of the evening paper announces. 'It might do in the* event of no second daily starting, but as there is more than a probability, of the latter event taking place,- 1 should think the success of the spec doubtful in the extreme. ' One tiling is very evident, however, tion is needed, and badly, needed too ; and the "■ Daily Time's"'". .proprietary must look' to themselves, or they .wilL have cause to lament the" shortsighted policy they have so long adopted, of allowing their subscribers and patrons to grumble without endeavoring to remove' the cause of complaint — secure in the belief that they have, in a sense, the field to, themselves, and 'gratified at the comfortable ' dividends • and percentages whiuh the property has been yielding them.
The library of reference in connection with - the Otftgo University gives promise of being -a very valuable addition to that institution — that* is to 1 say if we may judge by r . the large amounts of several of the subscriptions. . The hon. Robert Campbell, among other, donors of -an equal amount, forwarded a cheque for- £IOO to the Library Committee, and also intjmated that he would write home and ask his father to. assist the
